Have you noticed that things tend to work better when your life is in order? It’s no coincidence! You have to manage your life if you’re going to manage an entire business, a stellar restaurant. Here are some tips to help you get your first order of business – you – in order.
Invest in Yourself
Practice self-care. If you are stressed or overworked and not at the top of your game during the day, your restaurant won’t be either. Even if you don’t have time to work out or cook breakfast, set aside ten or fifteen minutes at the beginning of every day to meditate or enjoy some quiet time, a tip commonly practiced by successful people. Make eating healthy a priority too. If you feel off, make a conscious effort to eat only healthy lunches, even if it means taking another ten minutes to walk to a healthier lunch spot. Cooking healthier meals in advance is also a tried and true strategy.
With 50-plus hour restaurant work weeks, you don’t have some of the luxuries a normal 9 to 5 job would afford you, like being able to check out completely for an evening and let others deal with emergencies. So make sure to schedule in breaks for yourself. According to a study by Tork, taking breaks can actually improve your efficiency, especially in an unpredictable business like the restaurant world. Today’s restaurant POS systems allow you to keep track of what is going on without being physically present, so take advantage.
Manage Your Team
Make your life easier by delegating some of your responsibilities to your team. You may feel like in order to do something right you have to do it yourself, but not if you have trained your staff well. Don’t skimp on training. Well-trained employees in a happy work environment is one of the best investments any business, including a restaurant, can make. This way, you’ll be able to clear your head and not need to rush through tasks, tempting the possibility of making mistakes.
Sometimes, customer number one is yourself. Investing in self-care for yourself will pay off big time when you’re able to manage and organize your restaurant more smoothly afterwards. Take some time to have some zen for you.
